Scripture Union Daily Guide 11th August 2023 Outline:
Compare the lives of the three kings of Israel and Jotham, the king of Judah (for more details of the reign of Jotham, refer to 2 Chronicles 27). Note the impact of each king’s reign upon the people and nation: the instability, the cost people had to pay etc. Menahem had to extract extra tax from the people, even though limited to the rich ones. The spate of assassinations and overthrow of governments continues to plague Israel. And with the entrance of the Assyrian king, we see the beginning of the end of the kingdom of Israel.
God’s word remains true, righteousness exalts a nation, but sin condemns any people (Proverbs 14:34, NIV).
Jotham served as coregent while his father was banished to lifelong confinement due to leprosy. In the parallel passage in 2 Chronicles, we find that he learnt his lesson from what happened to his father. He followed the Lord wholly but would not attempt to enter the Temple to repeat his father’s error. We do well to take caution from the consequence of the life those who have gone before us lived.
• Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?
Help me, dear Lord, to respond in obedience to your word, to escape the consequence of sin.
