Scripture Union Daily Guide 14th August 2023 Outline:
Notice the way Assyria ensures to put her captives under perpetual slavery. Unlike the people of the Southern Kingdom who were also taken into exile some years after this episode, the Israelites have no home to return to. Their towns are taken over by strangers.
God proved to the ‘conquerors’ of Samaria that He is in charge. His power remains unlimited. He troubled them until they acknowledged His sovereignty over the land. However, since they do not have personal knowledge of the true God, they only added the God of Israel to their many gods. Unfortunately, the Israelites who remained on the land were hardly better informed. God detests this form of admixture of religion. In our own multi-religious situation especially with many New Age from the East, the challenge to choose to serve God alone is still relevant (Joshua 24:15). We need to decide to worship and serve the living God only.
From our passage today, we can see the reason the Jews of Jesus’ day distanced themselves from the Samaritans and for the Samaritan woman’s surprise in John 4:9. The Samaritans have become, just like their religion, a mixture of Gentile and Jews, probably more Gentile than Jewish.
