TOPIC: KNOWING THE LAW

OPENING PRAYER: Dear Lord, expose me to your truth as I read your word in Jesus name.

SCRIPTURE: Acts 22:22 – 30

Question(s) for Reflection
• Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?
• What truth is God revealing to me in this passage?

Like his newfound master, the crowd called for the elimination of Paul from the earth (v. 22). This was in fulfilment of what God told Ananias on how Paul must suffer for Christ’s sake (See Acts 9:15‐16). Paul was a Roman citizen and knew the law, hence his reaction when the Roman military commander instructed that he should be flogged (vs.24‐25).

Till today, security agencies and vigilante groups of many nations or communities use torture during interrogation. It is therefore important that as Christians we know the existing laws within the countries in which we reside so we can stand for our right whenever any attempt is made to trample upon it. Had Paul not known the law, he would have suffered unnecessary beatings. Such knowledge also helps us avoid falling foul of the law ignorantly. And you need not be a lawyer like Paul before you can do this.

As we however note in v.30, God was working behind the scenes creating an opportunity for Paul to stand before the Sanhedrin. In v.28 the Commander confessed he had to pay for his citizenship. We are citizens of heaven and that cost Jesus His life and us, nothing.

Practice/Word Application
Thought: “Ignorance of the law is no excuse”.

• Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?

Closing Prayer
• Lord help me to be a responsible citizen here on earth, as I prepare for my eternal home.
