TODAY’S TOPIC: SAY NO TO BACKSLIDING (VI)

Fire Scripture: Numbers 14: 26-30

Outline for MFM Devotional Today 8 December 2022

We will round off our discourse on the danger signals of backsliding today. It is important that we know all these causes of falling away or loss of faith and avoid each of them. My prayer is that, no matter what the devil does, your faith will not fail, in Jesus’ name. People fall away from God when they are led astray with vain imaginations. That is why we need to renew our minds and fill our hearts with the living word of God at all times. Vain imaginations include sinful thoughts and ungodly desires that birth evil deeds. They lead to backsliding; we should avoid them.

Jeremiah 7:24 mentions those who walked in the imagination of their evil heart, and went backward. You will not go backward, in Jesus’ name. Idleness and gossiping also leads to backsliding. We should stop them before they stop us. 1Timothy 5:12-13 says, “They have cast off their faith. They learn to be idle, wandering …tattlers and busybodies. 2 Timothy 2:16 adds, “Vain babblings… will increase unto more ungodliness.” Beloved, the truth is that we will account for very unprofitable word we speak and evil communication will corrupt our manners.

We should steer clear of these. Rather, let us spend quality time to study, memorise, meditate on the word, share it to others and pray. These are profitable spiritual exercises that will keep us from backsliding! Murmuring and ingratitude engender backsliding. Numbers 14:27-30 shows that the murmurers and ingrates among the children of Israel were not allowed to enter into the Promised Land. Similarly, fellowshipping with the wrong crowd will lead to backsliding.

The Bible affirms that a companion of fools shall be destroyed (Proverbs 13:20). Avoid evil association; keep company with genuine believers and do not forsake the assembly of the saints. Finally, lack of the fear of God will definitely cause backsliding. The fear of God is the beginning of wisdom. Jeremiah 2:19 says,” Thou hast forsaken the Lord … my fear is not in thee.”
