Scripture Union Daily Guide 9th November 2023 Outline:
Introduction to Jude
Jude, the writer of this letter, introduces himself as a brother of James. Both James and Jude were brothers of Jesus Christ. They probably became believers after the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Jude wrote this letter to warn his fellow believers to beware of those people who called themselves Christians but were living immoral lives and spreading false teachings. These were enemies from the inside. He urges the true Christians to be vigilant, to be on guard and contend for the faith.
Christians are very privileged people. In his opening greetings, Jude mentions three special privileges of the Christian (v.1b). Those who come to Christ enjoy the love of God and are kept by the power of Jesus Christ.
In this letter, Apostle Jude was seriously concerned (v.4) about the things happening in the church. The false teachers understood “grace” as mere forgiveness which allows believers to still live immoral life (compare Romans 6:1,2).
Secondly, they deny that Jesus is divine. These are key pillars of the Christian faith, hence his warning and counsel that believers should fight earnestly (or agonize) to keep to the teaching of true Christian doctrine and the practice of holy living (v.3).
From vs.8, 10, 11-13&16, outline the characteristic behaviours of the false teachers and how we can combat them. Notice their fate in vs.5-7. There are false teachers around today in the Christian Churches. How similar or different are they from those described in this passage? Believers have a serious responsibility to hold on to and pass on sound Biblical teaching and the practice of moral purity.
