Outline for Scripture Union Daily Guide (Adult)

Today we see Ahaz having trouble on all sides. In his time, he was surrounded by great prophets like Isaiah and Hosea in the northern kingdom and Micah in Judah, but he chose the path of wickedness. He went off his father’s path and worshiped idols. Leaving the ways of God has terrible consequences. Notice the action he took in v.16 and the result in vs.20,21. Solution to his problem backfired.

Many people turn to God when in trouble, but not Ahaz – he ‘became even more unfaithful to the Lord’ (v.22) and worshipped his enemies’ gods as he thought they were stronger than Jehovah (v.23). Compare Ahaz with David in their response to terrible situations. When David was being pursued by ruthless men, he confidently exclaimed, ‘Surely God is my help’ (Psalm 54:4). See the consequences of Ahaz’s idolatry in v.19 (cf. Proverbs 14:34).

The more he multiplied his gods, the more his sorrows multiplied yet in all these, Ahaz did not learn his lesson. Rather he got intoxicated with wickedness and gave Satan a field day in his life. Ahaz’s ultimate acts of defiance were desecrating the temple, shutting its doors to prevent worship, and setting up high places for idol worship all over Judah (vs.24,25). His wickedness followed him to his grave as he was denied the honour of resting with other kings (v.27).
