TODAY’S TOPIC: SOVEREIGNTY OF GOD

Opening Prayer: Dear Lord, may the entrance of your word bring light and life to all I will do today.

Scripture: Romans 9:14 –33

Question(s) for Reflection
• Q 7: What truth is God revealing to me in this passage?
• Q 8: Is there any other Biblical passage that can help me understand this passage better?

Scripture Union Daily Guide 31st May 2023 Outline:

What Paul writes here is very difficult for many to understand. Some even feel God is unjust (v.14) because He punishes people whom He did not choose to benefit from His mercy. They feel if they did not respond to the Gospel, since God left them out, they should not be penalised (v.19). But it is God’s prerogative to show His mercy and compassion to whomsoever He chooses (v.15; compare Exodus 33:19. Compare also Christ’s parable in Matthew 20:1-15.

Read vs.16-21 again and note how God does what is right, according to His perfect will. God, like the potter (v. 21), is not answerable to the human beings He created. We cannot question His right to exercise His judgment and power (vs.22-23).

The other side of the coin is our responsibility. God has the right to specify the conditions for receiving His mercy. We hence cannot say God has chosen to reject us when we, like Pharaoh, decide to harden our hearts or, like the Jews, decide contrary to God’s requirement, to seek His salvation through our work. Our justification before God is purely by faith (Romans 5:1).
