TODAY’S READING
Matthew 19:13-15

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
Though I will watch many things dissolve in life, Jesus will be with me always.

Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” – Matthew 19:14 (NIV)

When I was young, my mother and I went to church only to attend the funerals of loved ones. I had very little knowledge of Jesus. But that changed when I was five years old and Mama remarried. It was 1943, and my new dad was a soldier. We moved into an apartment near his military base, and things began to change for the better.

When our landlady invited us to her church, I wasn’t thrilled. But I was in for a surprise when we visited for the first time. The people were warm and welcoming, and I loved the music. The songs about Jesus excited me. I soaked it all up and fell in love with Jesus.

The next day I found a pencil and paper and asked Mama how to spell “Jesus.” I carefully wrote his name down and put the paper in my pocket. Every day I would turn the paper over in my hands, and I felt warmed and comforted. It eventually dissolved, worn out by those loving caresses.

I am now 83 years old and have seen many things dissolve. But I’ve learned that some things, like the love and comfort I still receive from Jesus, never go away.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear God, thank you for the people who have taught us about you and your son, Jesus. Remind us that no matter what we face, your love and presence remain steadfast. Amen.
