TODAY’S TOPIC: ALWAYS THERE

Carlos D. Ortiz (Puerto Rico)

TODAY’S READING
Isaiah 43:1-7

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
God will always accompany me on my journey.

The Lord says, “Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine.” – Isaiah 43:1 (NIV)

One of my aunts routinely mailed copies of El Aposento Alto — the Spanish language edition of The Upper Room — to her nieces, nephews, and friends. Through the daily devotional, I learned about Jesus and loving God. I kept every copy she sent.

At age 15, I declared my independence from my parents because they did not believe in me. I stopped studying the arts so I could pursue a career where I could support myself. Around this time, I also started attending church. But eventually, while trying to achieve my goals, I left the church and began to live a life of excess.

After seven years, I completed my doctorate, but I still wasn’t happy. I began to experience an existential crisis, so once again I read my old copies of El Aposento Alto. The stories were as relevant as when they were first published. During this time I realized that God has always been there for me.

I have since returned to my faith community, and my joy is complete. God dwells in my heart and guides my life and faith. I remain grateful that despite my failings, God stood by me. God’s love was manifested through my family, my church, and the stories in the daily devotional.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Almighty God, thank you for remaining faithful to us even when we turn from you. Fill us with your wisdom, and give us the courage to trust in your saving grace. Amen.

PRAYER FOCUS
Someone seeking a faith community
