TODAY’S TOPIC: FOR MY GOOD

TODAY’S READING
Psalm 33:1-11

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
Even when I don’t understand how, God is working for my good.

We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose. – Romans 8:28 (NRSV)

I was raised by my father and my paternal grandmother. My grandmother stepped in to help my father raise his three children after my mother left. I remember crying and wondering why I couldn’t have a mother like all of my friends. I felt embarrassed when my classmates asked, “Why does your grandmother walk you to school? Where is your mother?” It wasn’t until years after my grandmother died that I truly appreciated her sacrifice.

When I became a social worker, I was asked to start a program for grandparents who were raising their grandchildren. The program grew, and I was asked by the New York City Department for the Aging to head their Grandparent Resource Center. After helping grandparent caregivers across the city, the program eventually became a national model. How did I know about grandparents raising their grandchildren? Where did I get this passion to assist these families? How do I know how they feel and what they need? My family had lived it.

When I was young, I thought being cared for by my grandmother was the worst thing that could have happened. It turned out to be the best thing! Today’s quoted scripture helps me remember that God is always working for our good.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Lord, help us to trust you through the good and the bad and to remember that you are working for our good. Amen.

Grandparents raising grandchildren
