TODAY’S READING
Genesis 24:12-27

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
Following Rebekah’s example, I will be kind to a stranger today.

After [Rebekah] had given [Abraham’s servant] a drink, she said, “I’ll draw water for your camels too, until they have had enough to drink.” – Genesis 24:19 (NIV)

In today’s scripture, we read about Rebekah’s generosity and kindness to Abraham’s servant, who was a stranger to her. Her kindness eventually led her to marry Isaac.

When I was younger, I also experienced the kindness of a stranger. My family and I lived in South Africa. As a Kenyan, I knew well that I was a foreigner, and I was prepared to handle discrimination. One morning, we went to a distant mall with my dad to buy some equipment. When we got to the store, my dad was redirected to a nearby shop. We sat under a tree near the exit of the mall and waited for my dad. While we waited, a white man walked by multiple times and looked at us. We initially assumed he was lost, but after a while we became concerned, and my mother began praying. The man eventually approached us with a smile, had a short talk with my mother, and offered to buy us lunch.

I was amazed by the man’s kindness. That day, I decided to show kindness to strangers just as he showed kindness to me and my family. Let us all show kindness to a stranger today. We never know whose life we might change.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear God, enable us to be kind to strangers so that they may experience your love through us and know that they are valued. Amen.

PRAYER FOCUS
People facing discrimination
