Scripture Union Daily Guide 25th July 2023 Outline:

The whole world is in two distinct groups – Natural (unsaved) and Spiritual (saved) while those saved are either Mature or Immature (carnal). Although the Corinthian Christians were no doubt believers, they were still controlled by the flesh. They were worldly. Notice in vs.3-4 the reason Paul described them this way. Is it any different from what we see among many believers today? Divisions, quarrels, fighting, church crisis, breakups, and breakaways, etc. are all products of carnality.

Read vs.5-9 again and see Paul’s approach to the issues that tore the church into factions (‘political’ parties). For Paul, both he and Apollos were mere servants of Christ. Each is just trying to do the bidding of the Master. What do you make of this phrase, “…But ministers …as the Lord gave to each one” (v.5; cf. Romans 12:6-8)? The result depends, not on anyone’s effort or charisma but wholly on God, the one who leads people to repentance and brings spiritual growth. With this in mind, these men can engage in ministry without any ulterior motive or unhealthy competition. Compare their purpose in ministry with what obtains in our churches today. When our purpose for ministry is wrong, worldliness and immaturity will thrive in our ministry.
