OUTLINE FOR DAILY GUIDE DEVOTIONAL 24 NOVEMBER 2022

After six years of Athaliah’s ‘reign’, Jehoiada the priest finally had the courage to get rid of the idolatrous ruler. Notice how he assesses the situation (v.1), contacts people who matter (vs.1&2) and explains his plot (vs.4‐7) to restore David’s dynasty as promised by God. All these things were done behind the back of the ruthless Queen Mother (vs.12‐13).

When God chooses you to be an instrument for his purpose, he expects you to use wisdom in carrying this out. This requires an intimate walk with the Lord. Athaliah felt she had established herself as ruler after killing ‘all’ potential heirs to the throne – (22:10). But notice how her evil plan woefully failed and the result (v.15). What warning is here for us and our political leaders?

The eight‐year‐old king had to depend on Jehoiada to carry out the reforms. Notice what was involved to avoid (vs.16‐20). With a new king installed, the people were happy and peace reigned because the murderous regime of Athaliah had been removed. In Jehoiada, we see how the priest of God steers the entire kingdom to determine the right leadership. How can the church of Jesus Christ influence how political leaders are chosen in our countries?
