TODAY’S TOPIC: SLAVES TO RIGHTEOUSNESS

Opening Prayer: Let me know more of you today dear Lord as I meditate on your word.

Scripture: Romans 6:12 – 23

Question(s) for Reflection
• Q 3: Is there any command for me to obey?
• Q 7: What truth is God revealing to me in this passage?

Scripture Union Daily Guide 23rd May 2023 Outline:

Observe how many times the word “offer” (NIV) or “yield” (KJV) occurs in this passage (vs.13, 16 and 19). The body is not sinful; the body is neutral. It can be controlled either by sin or by God. But the responsibility to decide who will have the control lies with each one of us. Note the specific instructions in vs.12 and 13. These show that, apart from knowing what God has done (v.4) and believing that it is true in our lives (v.11), victory over sin also requires that we deliberately refuse to obey the suggestions of the sinful nature while we yield ourselves to God.

In vs.16-23, Paul uses the illustration of master and servant to explain that we cannot serve God and sin (cf. Matthew 6:24). It is very important to bear in mind that our actions are not neutral. The things we do daily are pointers to who our master is. Notice the benefits or rewards of serving sin (vs.21, 23) and of serving God (vs.22, 23)? What encouragement do we have in v.14?

Practice/Word Application

THANK GOD FOR:
► Making us His disciples who daily receive our strength to go on in Him.
► The provision of God’s word that gives us the encouragement even when all else seem to fail.

PRAY FOR:
► Deeper understanding of God, so we will remain true to Him to the end.
► Faith to keep holding on to Him and believing in Him in all things.
► Continually offering praise to God even when evidences are contrary.

PRAY AGAINST:
► Failing to fight the good fight of faith and to hold on to the eternal life Christ has given.
► Holding on to past grudges, failures and disappointments instead of looking at this new dawn.
