TODAY’S TOPIC: IN TIME OF DISTRESS

Opening Prayer: I open my heart to meditate on your word, teach me your ways oh Lord.

Scripture: 2 King 3:1-27

Question(s) for Reflection
• Q 1: What does the passage teach about God the Father, or God the Son or God the Holy Spirit?
• Q 2: Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?

Scripture Union Daily Guide 9th June 2023 Outline:

Jehoram seems to be a bit better than his parents but still half-hearted and inconsistent in following God (vs.1-3). And God is not pleased with half-hearted services (Revelation 3:15-16).

Read vs.9-13 again and take note of the different ways Jehoram and Jehoshaphat responded to the same situation. Jehoram saw hopelessness. Although he never consulted God before embarking on this mission, he blamed God for the distressing situation they found themselves (vs.10&13). However, Jehoshaphat, a man who has prepared his heart to seek God always (2 Chronicles 19:3), believed that God can help them. He suggested that they seek God’s counsel.

And God intervened. He provided water and gave them victory over Moab (vs.20-27), according to His words through Elisha (vs.15-19). We must not despair in time of distress, instead let us seek God’s intervention and He will help us.

Note how Elisha refused to be intimidated by the royal splendour of the three kings. He fearlessly declared God’s displeasure with Jehoram and the evils of his father’s house (vs.11-14). How does this compare with church leaders in our time? How can the church speak the truth powerfully like Elisha?
